Tianjin located in northern part of the country, is one of the
4 municipalities directly under the Central Government. It is only
50 km from the heart of the city to Bohai Sea in the east and 120
km to Beijing, the capital of China, in the northwest. Tianjin occupies
an area of 11919.7 square km, and consists of 18 districts and counties,

Tianjin¡¯s import and export are expanding steadily, the annual volume
of import and export amounting to about $23 billion and the export
of machinery, electronic and hi-tech products accounting for 80%
of the total export of Tianjin. Meanwhile, Tianjin imports mechanical
equipment, raw materials and daily use products in a large quantity
to satisfy the domestic market demands. Tianjin¡¯s foreign economic
relations and technical cooperations have been developing rapidly
and there are more and more enterprises established overseas by
domestic corporations. In 2002,about 7000 people were sent abroad
and people working abroad totaled over 11870. Tourism in Tianjin
grows constantly, hosting 500 thousand of overseas tourists and
32.63 million of domestic ones, income from tourism being near £¤60
billion in 2002. Since 1984, Tianjin has set up Tianjin Economic
& Technological Development area and the Tianjin Port Free Trade
Zone. In 1994, Tianjin put forward the strategic target of construction
of the New Coastal Area in about 10 years. After several years¡¯
construction, Tianjin New Coastal Area has become the new area with
great growing potential in the development of Tianjin¡¯s economy.
Its GNP and export make up 40% and 62.1% of the total of Tianjin
respectively. ¡°Opening to the outside world¡± is the strong engine
for accelerating the construction of Tianjin¡¯s modernization.
